Regeneron ISEF 2021 Judging and Volunteer Request
Dear ASCE Members,
Each year, ASCE New Orleans supports the Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair (GNOSEF) by sponsoring the event and providing volunteer judges for engineering categories. This year, we increased out involvement by providing a special award to a Senior Division project that demonstrated interest and achievement in Civil Engineering. Now, our help is being requested for the International Science and Engineering Fair.
The Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2021 is looking for volunteer judges. The judging will take place virtually through a video conferencing platform from May 3-6, 2021. This is the world’s largest and most prestigious pre-college science and engineering exhibition and is managed by the Society for Science. Even as a virtual event, they anticipate over 1500 finalists from over 60 countries, regions and territories including the 50 states of the United States. Finalists win the right to compete at ISEF through winning top honors of their regional, state and country fairs. Please see below and attached for an invitation to participate:
“We need over 2,000 professional scientists and engineers to volunteer as judges to provide a sufficient number of interviews for each project within the 21 categories of competition. Judges will participate on one of the 4 days listed above, determined by their selected judging category. Judges can be university faculty and scientists, industrial engineers and scientists, representatives of private and federal research centers and agencies, medical researchers, post-doctoral fellows, and senior graduate students. Grand Award judges are responsible for reviewing students’ research that has been previously approved and posted online, and then will interview students virtually discuss and score their research projects.
A Grand Award Judge must have one of the following qualifications:
-
- Have a minimum of six years related professional experience beyond receiving their B.A., B.S., or Master’s degree, OR
- Have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent (D.O., Ed.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., etc.), OR
- Is a current graduate student with more than four years of doctoral-level research experience of who is within one year of doctoral dissertation defense
- Please note: Affiliated science fair directors and elementary or secondary school teachers are NOT eligible to serve as Regeneron ISEF judges.
Scientists and engineers who are interested in judging must apply for the opportunity to participate. The time commitment is minimally a 3-hour block of interview and up to 9 hours of interviews on one of the 4 days of judging (May 3-6) dependent on the category. Once a judge’s application is accepted, the Society will communicate the judge’s assignment date as well as other judging details.
We not only encourage you to register as a Grand Award judge, but to share this opportunity with colleagues, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and members of your professional societies and institutions. This is a golden opportunity to participate in a rewarding community service endeavor, to support and engage with the next generation of scientists and engineers and with the added benefit of no travel time!
