ASCE New Orleans Branch
Holiday Donation Drive
Dear Members,
While we will not be able to get together for a Christmas party this year, we still want to embrace the spirit of the holiday season; especially in such a difficult year that has had a long-lasting impact on our community due to COVID-19. With that in mind, the ASCE New Orleans Branch is proud to announce that we have selected two exceptional local nonprofit organizations for donations made by the Branch. These donations provide us a way to give back to our community during the holiday season, within the midst of a pandemic, and provide support to local nonprofit organization. The ASCE New Orleans Branch has selected the following two organizations, which support education and opportunities for youth in STEM careers, for individual cash donations of $1,250:
GNO STEM – Greater New Orleans STEM Initiative (formerly named Core Element) provides kindergarten through 12th grade math and science teachers with the tools and resources they need to deliver hands-on, minds-on learning opportunities in the classroom. GNOSTEM’S teacher professional development programs ensure that students receive the rigorous and enriched classroom instruction they need to encourage critical thinking and ultimately foster student proficiency and interest in STEM subjects and careers.
STEM NOLA – STEM NOLA designs and delivers activities, programs & events that bring inspiration, motivation and training to all STEM stakeholders, specifically focusing on under-served communities, across the city. Participants receive the opportunity to obtain 21st Century skills of Communication, Collaboration and Critical Thinking.
We encourage our members to further our initiative by selecting local nonprofits for donations during this holiday season. We encourage you to donate to a nonprofit whose cause speaks to you but if you need some ideas, below is a list of some local nonprofits that are serving our community:
Feed the Second Line by Krew of Red Bean – Supports brass bands, social aid and pleasure clubs, and Mardi Gras Indians by providing them with meals from local restaurants and produce from local farmers.
Son of a Saint – Provides boys in New Orleans without fathers with mentorship, education, recreation, camaraderie, cultural enrichment, emotional support and helping to fill the void for dozens of fatherless young men in New Orleans.
Second Harvest Food Bank – Second Harvest Food Bank leads the fight against hunger in South Louisiana by providing food access, advocacy, education, and disaster response. Second Harvest provides food and support to 700+ community partners and programs across 23 parishes.
While we may not be able to be together to celebrate the holidays, with your help and support, the ASCE New Orleans membership can still a significant positive impact on our community. If you and/or your organization supports our initiative and provides a donation to nonprofit of your choosing, please e-mail us and let us know which nonprofit you donated to. Next month, we will send out an e-mail with a list of ASCE members and organizations that donated to local nonprofits during the holiday season to show the impact that we had on our community!
