On Tuesday, May 14, 2019, the New Orleans Branch of ASCE set up a booth at STEM Day with the Baby Cakes for the second year in a row. At this event, over 40 exhibitors spoke to over 8,000 middle to high school students about STEM topics. This year the Outreach Volunteer Group chose to have a rain garden demonstration for the attending students. They were able to show how the layers of different soils act as a flow regulator and filter. In addition to the constructed model rain garden, samples of each of the soils were on display for the students to see and feel the differences in the layers of the model. As always, the volunteers explained the job of the many types of civil engineers and handed out activity pamphlets to those who wanted to know more.
